SPSS Site License Information

October, 2009 - IT Services has applied for an extension to the SPSS V15 (Win) and SPSS 13 (Mac) site license codes so  contact IT Services via the IT Service Desk should you require to use either version past the 31st Oct, 2009.
Please note that SPSS data files themselves are compatible with V17/18, it is only the output files which may require some conversion if they need to be modified. Otherwise, output files can be viewed with the standalone application, Legacy Viewer.

August, 2009 - Codes for SPSS 15.0 for Windows and 13.0 for Mac will expire on 31st October 2009 and SPSS will not be issuing nay site license codes beyond this date.  All SPSS users will need to migrate to newer versions before this date. SPSS 15 will start to give expiry warnings in September and then expire on 31st October.

Contract Summary

The SPSS site license agreement is an annual contract, centrally funded by Murdoch University. All Murdoch University staff may use this software for research and teaching purposes, current Murdoch students may use the software in Murdoch computer labs or on Murdoch owned equipment while on campus.

All SPSS users should read and be aware of the full licence conditions which are in Adobe PDF format. Especially take note of the home use conditions which state home use is not available to undergraduate or post graduate students. As  is the case for all commercial software supplied by ITS, users should contact the IT Service Desk to arrange installation.

Staff Home Use

Full time or part time employees of Murdoch University are allowed to install SPSS on a home computer/laptop at their principal place of residence.

Students ARE NOT allowed to install SPSS software onto their home or personal computers under this SPSS Site License Agreement.

Patches and Hotfixes

From time to time SPSS provides"Hotfixes" to fix known issues or "Patches" to upgrade functionality and these used to be available locally from the following locations but have since been restriced so please contact the IT Service Desk should you require them.

Additional Modules Included in the Site Licence

Manuals - available to staff and students

A large collection of manuals are available in PDF format for each module in each version of SPSS.  SPSS has approved use by staff  and students, both on and off campus is. All manuals are currently stored at \\softserv\software\spss\manuals and staff should contact the IT Service Desk if they require copies. A system of providing access to these manuals to current Murdoch students is under development and should soon be available.

SPSS Australasia has kindly made available to Murdoch staff and students the full printed version of the following two training courses in Adobe PDF format.

Updating the license strings

The SPSS software requires a current license string to run, this license string is issued to Murdoch each year and needs to be updated with the SPSS software. To update your license string contact the IT Service Desk to request the current string and follow these instructions.

For Windows, version 13 onwards

  • Make sure your computer is connected to the internet.
  • Start the "License Authorization Wizard" either from the "start menu SPSS program group" or from the "Help menu" within SPSS.
  • Choose "Start" and then select "Use Authorization via Internet to get License", select "Next".
  • Enter the latest Authorization code and select "Next"

For Macintosh, version SPSS 11 onwards

  • Insert the SPSS  for Mac OS X CD-ROM into your Macintosh.
  • When the CD-ROM has mounted you will find the License Update Utility in the SPSS  volume.
  • Double click on this License Update Utility and you will be prompted for the new license code.
  • Once you have entered the new license code for SPSS 11, you can click on the 'Update' button to check the status of the new license code or you can click on the 'OK' button to apply the new license code to your SPSS 11 for Mac OS X installation.

SPSS support

SPSS supply reasonable technical assistance via the telephone or email to Murdoch Universities designated IT support representatives but the extent of such supportl rest exclusively with SPSS. SPSS technical support does not cover hardware, operating system, network or third party software. SPSS however offers a large range of support services which are listed below as are a number of manuals available locally at Murdoch.

IT Services responsibility is to provide the SPSS software but ITS is not responsible for providing statistical advise to users or for detailed help in setting up SPSS command files.
