Centrally-Managed Web ServersA centrally-managed Web Server is a registered Web Server hosted on a computer owned by Murdoch University with the hardware, operating system and Web Server software all managed by designated staff within the Computer Services section or the Communications Services section, of IT Services. Where the Web Server interacts with an associated database, the database is also hosted on a computer owned by Murdoch University with the hardware, operating system and database environment, managed by designated staff within the Computer Services section, or the Communications Services section, often in conjunction with staff in the Information Systems Services section. The host computers of centrally-managed Web Servers are 'owned' by the Office of IT Services, or the applications using the Web Servers are enterprise systems. The centrally-managed Web Servers, the majority of which are run as Secure Servers, include the following:
For problems connecting to centrally-managed Web Servers, contact details are provided. There are several Web Servers managed for areas of the University (eg. Divisions, Schools) by staff members from the Computer Services section, or the Customer Services section of IT Services. Although the Web Administrators for these Web Servers are members of IT Services staff, as the Web Servers are run on host computers owned by Divisions and Schools, these Servers are not considered to be centrally-managed Web Servers. Where the Web Administrator for a Web Server is not a staff member from IT Services, and the host computer is considered to be owned by an area of the University, although availability of the hardware and operating system may be the responsibility of Computer Services, the Web Server is not considered to be a centrally-managed Web Server (eg. gamp.murdoch.edu.au). MurdochNet HostAdministration of the Web Server software for the MurdochNet Host, the MurdochNet Development Server, and the MurdochNet NT Server, is carried out jointly by the Computer Services section and the Web Services group within the Information Systems Services section. For a listing of other administrative services provided by staff in Web Services, refer to MurdochNet Administration. For details of Web-based applications and utilities in use on the MurdochNet Host, refer to Applications Development.
