Mailing Lists

Mailing lists provide an easy method of communication among groups of people. Instead of typing hundreds of addresses, you can simply type one and all those subscribed to the list will receive your message.

Exchange mailing lists

Staff at Murdoch university using the Exchange email system have access to numerous automatically maintained mailing lists based upon university organizational groups, so staff are requested to first check if a suitable Exchange mailing list is already available.

Staff may request a new Exchange based mailing list (Exchange Distribution List) and this is advised in preference to a Mailman list in circumstances where:

  • All those to be included have Exchange email accounts
  • None of the extra features of a Mailman list as listed below are required

To request a new Exchange mailing list please contact the IT Service Desk

Mailman mailing lists

In cases where no suitable Exchange list exists or where it is not considered appropriate to make a new Exchange list Murdoch University has adopted the “Mailman” mailing list software to provide mailing lists to staff and suitable student organisations. Mailman lists have addresses of the form listname@lists.murdoch.edu.au  and a full list of all the publically advertised Mailman lists is available from here.

Circumstances were a Mailman mailing list may be required include:

  • Where people outside of the university need to be included
  • Where a moderated discussion list is required
  • Where mailing list needs to allow people to join or leave by themselves
  • Where email needs to be archived

To request a new Mailman list staff need to go to the Mailman mailing list request form and fill in all the required information. A  confirmation will be sent to the email address provided as the list administrator and when your request has been processed (within 1-2 business days), you will receive an email with all your Mailman list information.

More information on how to use Mailman mailing lists is available here.
