IT Services Sections

The Office of Information Technology Services consists of the following functional areas :

The Directorate

The Directorate has primary responsibility for coordinating IT strategic planning activities of the Areas, and providing administrative services for the effective operation of the Section.

Communications Services

The Communications Systems section concentrates exclusively on network planning, development and maintenance, management of external network access, and gradual integration of voice, video and data services. The section is also responsible for phones. Communications Services is comprised of the following sections:

Customer Services

Staffed by experienced ITS support staff, Customer Services provide full telephone support for the Murdoch Community. The Service Desk operation is your first point of contact - from Monday to Friday, 8:30am to 5:00pm - for questions about supported applications and hardware. Our access to comprehensive Murdoch and supplier knowledge bases means that many problems are able to be resolved over the telephone at first contact.

For problems that can't be solved over the telephone, an appointment is made for an IT Support Officer to make an on-site visit. All problems are assigned priorities, so if your issue is critical, you can be assured of priority attention.

Customer Services is comprised of the following sections:

Computer Services

The Computer Services section provides unified systems support, database administration, and capacity planning for all strategic systems, and management of the University IT Security and Disaster Recovery Plans. The central Web servers used by the Campus-Wide Information Service (MurdochNet) are also managed by this section. Computer Services is comprised of the following sections:

  • Database Administration

Information Systems Services

The Information Systems Services section has overall responsibility for strategic projects, data administration, development and support of mission-critical applications systems. This section also manages the coordination function for MurdochNet. Information Systems Services is comprised of the following sections:

  • Web Services
  • Application Support Services

IT Security

The University's IT Security Services section is responsible for:

  • Maintaining the University's Information Technology Security Policy
  • Formulating IT security plans, procedures, and standards
  • Administering the University's virus protection strategy
  • Issuing virus and other IT security alerts and advisories
  • Overseeing the response to serious IT Security emergencies
  • Surveying the University's IT resources and categorising them by security sensitivity
  • Performing security reviews of major new IT systems during the planning phase
  • Providing education, advice, consulting and training to IT System Custodians and the University computing community on IT security matters
  • Investigating attempted breaches of IT security and other related incidences
