Software Licensing at Murdoch University

Murdoch has entered into a number of agreements with software vendors to license software for use by the Murdoch University community.

Software License Agreements

The following table lists the software agreements Murdoch has, who these agreements cover and how to obtain the software. To arrange to have any of this software installed, or to find out more about licensing, you should contact your area's IT support person or the IT Service Desk

Variations in License Conditions

Please note and be aware that the license agreement between Murdoch University and each manufacturer varies to a greater or lesser extent with variations including.

  • Some licences permit staff use on personally-owned workstations (e.g. Adobe, EndNote, Macromedia, Microsoft CA (Office-Pro & FrontPage), Norton Anti-Virus, SPSS).
  • Some licences permit student use on personally-owned workstations (e.g. EndNote).
  • Some licences are multi-platform (e.g. Adobe, EndNote, Macromedia, Norton Anti-Virus, SPSS).
  • Some licences are paid  from central university funds (eg EndNote, Microsoft CAUDIT Agreement products, Norton Anti-Virus, SPSS)
  • Some licenses are pay-as-you-install (e.g. Microsoft Select products (Project, Server 2003, etc), Adobe products).
  • Some software is time-bombed and has to have a license code typed in every year. (e.g. SigmaPlot, SPSS).

Home use of software

Some of our software vendors permit Murdoch staff (and in some cases, Murdoch students) to install and use their software products on workstations not owned by Murdoch University. This "home use" of the software is subject to very specific limitations which include.

  • Software is only to be use for Murdoch University teaching, administrative and research related purposes.
  • Staff/students using this software on personally owned or leased workstations do so at their own risk.
  • Copies of this software media and/or the ability to use these products must not be passed to persons who are not employed by or students of Murdoch University.
  • Staff/students must undertake to remove this software from their computer on disposal of the computer, Murdoch's termination of the License Agreement, or termination of employment/study with Murdoch University, whichever occurs first.

If home use is allowed for staff and/or students it is indicated in our

Murdoch has an obligation to keep records of home use and make staff/students aware of the conditions of use. To do this ITS requires that staff/students are made to signed the appropriate home use form, the original needs to go to the IT Service Desk and the staff/student keeps a copy.

Forms are available from the ITS "forms" web site http://www.its.murdoch.edu.au/forms/

To obtain a copy of the required software on home computers staff will in most cases need to contact their IT support person or the IT Service Desk who will arrange to have the "home use" form completed then either supply the software media and instructions or request the computer is brought on campus to have the software installed.
